Who qualifies for VAT-free goods?

You’ll only be able to have eligible goods VAT-free if you’re ‘chronically sick or disabled’ and the goods are for your personal or domestic use.

You do not need to be registered disabled or eligible for any other benefit to qualify for VAT-free goods.

For VAT purposes, you are chronically sick or disabled if you have:

  • A physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect on your ability to carry out everyday activities.
  • A condition that the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness (that’s a long-term health condition.)

Examples of long term-medical conditions or disabilities pertaining to the products we supply at Talking Watch Shop would be:

  • Visually Impaired
  • Alzheimer’s/Dementia
  • Physically Disabled
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Terminally Ill

Charities with a registered charity number also qualify for VAT free goods.

How do I prove my eligibility to claim?

Medical documentation is not required (either from yourself, or a person claiming on your behalf) to declare that you’re disabled or chronically sick, but if you are unsure you may wish to consult your doctor or other medical adviser.

Which items are eligible?

VAT exemption applies to items designed to be used by someone who is chronically sick or disabled.

Currently, most of the items that are available to purchase here at Talking Watch Shop meet that criteria and are clearly labelled as ‘VAT Relief Available’ with both prices displayed.

Important Information

Talking Watch Shop are required to keep a record of all customers who have qualified for VAT relief and present the information to HMRC if requested.

Please Note: It is an offence to falsely claim that you, or the person you are buying for, is eligible for VAT relief.
